Here is a pic of a new natural edged bowl I did last night. It is made from mulberry and is about 6" in diameter and 2-3" deep. The walls are about 1/4" thick to show the bark. The finish so far is one coat of Minwax Tung Oil Finish. It will get buffed in a couple of days on my Beall system.

This piece of mulberry shows an inclusion where mild spalting has taken place. It is interesting to me that mulberry turns a lucious chocolate brown when it spalts. It is a lovely contrast to the bright yellow of the heartwood and creamy white of the sapwood. Another feature that I discovered in the grain is the flaming that appears inside the bowl.

Thanks for looking.

Uhmmmmmmm, Keith. Me thinks your walls were much, MUCH thinner than 1/4", as I can't see them at all! :D

I always wonder which way they use the logs to turn it into a bowl. Your photo and the other guys tell me that it was turned with the trunk and not across the trunk. ( Did I say this right?:o )

I call it --through the grain.

I anit real sure what the correct term is.

Real nice bowl---glad you got the pic up.

Ahhhhh, now you're talkin'! :) Looks great and I agree on the "flaming"...Looks beautiful! Actually, all of the grain on that is very nice, particularly on the inside of the bowl. Very neat patterning on the interior. Good job, Keith! :D Keep 'em coming!

Very nice bowl Keith. I want to try one of those if I can ever find one that the bark will stay on.

That's really nice, Keith. I haven't done many of these and none as nice as yours. Great job!

Thanks Everyone.

Ralph, I think the proper term is side-grain.

John, see what I mean about the 1/4" walls. They really are there.

Dick, I make liberal use of CA to strenthen the wood. This sometimes helps it stay on.

Ted, this was just a chunk of mulberry I had from a tree that went down in a storm in April of 2002. My favorite part of turning is discoving what lies inside the wood. I am always astounded by the beauty of the wood inside.

jim, I have learned that I like making natural edged bowls and do plan to continue making them.

Great looking bowl, Keith. You guys with all your beautiful turnings are going to force me into buying a lathe. And I don't have my new shop set up yet.

I can't seem to get the tree to grow right. I may never get a chance to turn one like this. It is a beauty!
