My brothers girlfriend wanted a coffee table and this is what I came up with. Several firsts on this but the turning ones are: First time to offset turn (the legs). First time to use my steady rest (long stretchers).

Bubinga veneer for main top with an ebony inlay. Ash frame, legs and on stretchers. Bubinga in the middle of the stretchers. Bubinga insert with ash and African blackwood. The insert is turned also although you can't tell it.

It's beautiful. That veneer is amazing. I love the shape of the legs, and the turned detail in the stretchers is very nice.

Thank you to all for the kind comments.

Brian,

It took me a loooonnng time. Not only was there several new techniques involved but since it was for my brother's girlfriend of ten years I figured I was not going to get paid what it was really worth. That is ok since it is not perfect and she was the test guinea pig but I did not feel an imperative to finish it quickly.

Nice table. What did you use for the veneer under layment / substrate?:)

Truly fantastic table! And as an added benefit, it looks like it will ward off the evil eye: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_eye , which is very cool.

Ron,

I used MDF. I know that there is a running feud about plywood vs. MDF but I thought I would give it a try since a VERY good cabinet maker recommended it.
