I am making a couple pens for Christmas gifts and have to find funnels for the desk stands. I am making slimline pen kits with gold trim or gold with a black stripe on the clip. The only source I have found for the funnels is PSI. Also I need business card holders. Nothing like waiting for the last second. I have wipe on poly for a clear. Is this ok for pens? Time is tight and it would be easier to use what I have on hand. The material i am using for the pens is bocote, bolivian rosewood, marblewood, and wenge. I regretefuly am not going to have the same material for the bases. I hope it won't look terrible. Time will tell!

Thanks in advance, Chris

If you've got superglue, makes a durable, easy to apply finish. I'm able to finish the blanks in a matter of minutes that way and onto assembly.

superglue? yes to assemble, but finish? sounds like a sticky situation?

Packard Woodworks has pen funnels. Look under pen making supplies, desk accesories.

Here's a link to them. http://www.packardwoodworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=packard&Category_Code=pm-desk-zpenfun

Tim beat me to it but Packard Woodworks has what you want. Also yes I use thin CA to finish my pens. I use about 3 or 4 coats then buff. Makes a great durable finish. Lots of info on how to do it.

Chris -- Here's a vid that covers how to do the CA finish for pens. This is very close to the process that I was taught (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orcgOf4siqc). Sub out the polish he's using for Shellawax and you've got exactly the same process that Dave taught me back in May -- and I've used it extensively.
Sorry I can't help on the pen funnels--but it looks like others have a solution for you. However, I can offer http://www.etsy.com/shop/SDIWoodworking?section_id=5720736 for suggestions on what a business card holder might look like. I've made a few based on this sort of design on the bandsaw. I'm certain that you'll be able to reverse engineer how he's done the holders. (I did mine out of lumber and have received numerous wows...so even the cheapest of wood can yield spectacular results.)

Good luck --
Chris

edit- adding the link to youtube...got distracted by my kids and forgot.

Check out Craft Supplies USA. They carry both "pen holders" and business card holders. Here's a link: http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Projects___Desk_Accessories_p_1?Args=

As for finishing pens, here's a link to a great article on the topic: http://www.woodturnerruss.com/FSOriginal4.html

CA glue is easier than it sounds for a finish. I found I used too much glue on my first one but got easier after that. I used a paper towel and thin glue. Info already mentioned should help with technique.
