Tis the season, to learn to turn.
My first attempt at a bowl.
I found it quite satisfying, still look at it and think: Wow! I did that!
Now of course, I need to make more for gifts.
Wood is Jobillo, from a 6X6X3 blank, planed one side and glued a piece of oak on for a stub to mount in my chuck, built a donut chuck for the bottom turning.
Finish is wax and mylands friction polish.
Yes, I will sign and date it, when the "new" wears off.
Thanks for the help in how to sharpen my bowl gouge.

Mike,
Excellent first bowl! Gorgeous wood! Sign it....date it...and compare it later. You will be surprised.
Congrats on building a donut chuck. It's not that hard and it's an indespensible tool for finishing the bottoms of bowls.
Nicley done Sir!

Mike,
Bowl looks great. I like the grain pattern that shows in that wood. I've never turned a bowl yet. So you've taught me a new term to check out--donut chuck... :)

Good looking bowl Mike! Congrats on getting your first one completed! It gets easier - and more fun - with time! Looking forward to seeing the next one!

Welcome. Very nice looking effort. I bought one of those blanks at WC, but I haven't done anything with it... I hope the piece I got turns out that nice. Thanks for posting and looking forward to future turnings.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement.
I spent today making my second bowl, this time in figured maple.
Finish is golden brown transtint dye, sanded, then velvit oil and Mylands friction polish.

Wow! Quite the second bowl! Love the wood and color! Nice work!
Highly suggest that for future turnings - start a separate thread for each so they don't get buried in an existing thread and folks miss them.

Both of those are great bowls. Donut chuck looks good. I would keep the first one as Ken said for comparison a year or so from now. You will be amazed.

Welcome, you picked a dandy piece of wood for that second bowl. That is a real beauty. Two bowls in one post, you must be falling fast. Keep up the good work.
