As requested, I managed to scrounge up pics of a couple of my amateurish projects from years past. Both were more of an exercise in form rather than in construction. Though I did learn quite a bit about both during the process.
Both are made with cheap wood from the big box stores and painted a sort of purplish-brown color.
The Tetris shaped shelves are 5/8" thick and butt-jointed. There are 1.25" square, 1/8" thick, clear acrylic pieces in 4 corners of each for hanging.
The little coffee table was framed with 2x material and then skinned with thin ply. The gnarly routed edges are there to hide my poor job of getting the edges of the ply to line up.
Pics of pens to come at a later time.
