Maple for from a 2" thick board I have; turned on my Jet mini. about 5" in diameter. Danish oil, 2-wheel buffed, and Renaissance waxed. Sorry about the poor photography - need to make a box for that; the wife calls it the 'Jupiter'; enjoy!

Mike that sure is different! But, sorta neat. So, how did you accomplish the textured portion?

BTW, I think I saw something like that hovering over my house the other night, 'cept it had some flashing lights and stuff! Disappeared real quick, though!:D

John, used my shopmade parting tool to cut the lines which limit the texturing, and then cut the texture with my Sorby texturing tool. Thanks for the comments. The piece is sorta based on one I saw on David Ellsworth's website.

Pretty cool. I don't want to even think about hollowing something that short and wide... yikes! I like the embellishment. If you turn another like this one, I wonder what it would look like ebonized. Thanks for posting.

Mike - that sure is a different form - great imagination! Must have been a real challenge to hollow out!
