So, years ago, a friend of mine and I where discussing home defense. it was late, and things got silly, and we finally decided that the best non-firearm home defense weapon would be a huge hammer. i swore to him that day that i would make him a giant hammer.
well, finally, the resources fell into my lap, and the final result was this:
134644
134643
the electrical tape in the first picture is holding the rawhide in place while it dries. (rawhide dogbones have other uses!) the rawhide on the base of the handle turned out looking bad, so i ended up taking it off in the end.
the head is one solid piece of a cedar post. the bands around it are just shaped out of it. the plugs are something like ash, whatever they had at the hardware store.
handle is an hickory axe handle from the hardware store, pre finished.
shaped it with the table saw, circular saw, and chisels, and finally a orbital sander.
the stain on the main part of it i cant remember, might be minwax early american, and the bands are minwax dark walnut stain.
my friend loves it. there's nothing like coming through on an inside joke 5 years later.
obviously, its mostly a decorative/brag item, as the cedar would not stand up to more than about, one whack against anything more durable than an egg, but it was a lot of fun to make, and even more fun to see my friends face when i presented him with a hammer straight out of the comic books.
