I am wanting to buy the oneway vacuum chuck kit but am not really wanting to but the pump from oneway as I think that $399.00 is a little too steep. Does anyone know of a direct replacement pump that is cheaper? I know that lots of people build there own vacuum systems but I am not really interested in doing that I want to buy the system if at all possible.

Thanks.

Would this be the one? Also is it a direct replacement or is there some adapters needed? Thanks mike.

Your instincts are correct - $399 is very expensive for that pump when used ones are available for $100 or less. I found my first one on Ebay and later on another one on Craigslist. In both cases, they were Gast 1/4 hp and do the job nicely.

For example, here is one on ebay: http:// cgi.ebay.com/VACUUM-PUMP-Gast-0523-V191Q-G588DX_W0QQitemZ150393529744QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_ Pumps?hash=item2304272590#ht_500wt_1182

And here's another one that is brand new for only $170: http:// cgi.ebay.com/Gast-Vac-Pump-0523-131Q-G588dx-NEW-IN-BOX_W0QQitemZ230407785320QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_Pum ps?hash=item35a55fcb68#ht_500wt_1182

To get to eBay - copy the address to your browser and remove the space just after the double hash marks //

Check out Surpluscenter.com for vacuum pumps. They have the Gast 1/4 hp pumps you can use for about $55.

I bought a 220 volt from ebay for $20. Works great. 220 volt prolly made the price low, but you can buy them on ebay for $80 all day. You can buy a lot of brass fittings, poly hose and a petcock and gauge for the difference.

Only one I saw there for that price range only pulled 20 in. HG max. Thats a bit low isnt it?

Jim, that's the model 522 and it will pull a lot more than 22 if the system is sealed correctly. Only difference between it and the 523 model is 1/2 cfm.

Yep thats the one alright. The item description maybe is erring on the low side?? It says only 20 max.

Jim - seems to me that they listed the 523 the same way. Have no idea why, but the 522 pump would work very well for one of our vac systems.

Try EBay for Gast vacuum pumps. I got one with two filters and a guage
for $125 and it pulls 25 inches

I have one of the 220 v one from surplus center with a 4 in home made chuck I have held 18 in platters just fine. In fact the first one they sent me the vanes when to trash first time I tried it called the surplus center in two days had another pump and they told me to just keep the other one in case I may need parts some day what a deal

As long as you're trying to save money, in addition to the pump, Hold Fast chucks are cheaper as well. I've got two sets of the small and medium Oneway, and I wind up using the Hold fast twice as often. Several vendors carry them, but I get them at Hartville Tools.

Keep the cost down by making vacuum chucks out of PVC pipe. Lots of size choices. Use the couplings - not the pipe. Couplings have thicker walls.

Gather up a faceplate, piece of hardwood, silicone glue/sealer, PVC pipe coupling and some funny foam from Michaels or Hobby Lobby and you are ready to go. Mount the faceplate on the hardwood chuck base with screws and silicone glue/sealer. Turn the chuck base round. Turn a grove in the chuck base to match PVC coupling. Drill a hole in the chuck base to match the faceplate spindle hole. Attach the PVC coupling to the chuck base with silicone glue/sealer. Use the lathe tailstock to press fit and center the PVC coupling on the chuck base. After the silicone glue/sealer on the PVC coupling has cured, true-up the edge of the PVC coupling. Attache the funny foam - or equal - to the edge of the PVC coupling with contact cement. You're done!

See attached pictures.

I picked up a 110V vacuum pump up off of ebay about a year ago for about $60. The seller was also kind enough to send a input filter along with it to keep shavings out of the pump diaphragm since I had told him of my intended use although I have yet to get it setup.

Since I have seen some mention how much they are pulling, I thought I'd toss this in as a reference for you:

a perfect Vac is 29.92Hg at Sea Level. As you increase go up in altitude, what you draw will begin to drop, Ie. 500ft = 29.38Hg, 1000 = 28.86Hg.

Here is a link to a chart that also lists kPa A, Millibars, Torr etc.

Jonathan, that's the one; works like a champ for me, right out of the box. :)

Bernie, I routinely get 23/24 on the gauge; photos to prove it!
