I'm rebuilding an old 50s DeWalt GE RAS, and I'm replacing the hardware since most of it is pretty badly rusted. I've been using Type 8 bolts for everything, but I've run in to one bolt I can't seem to find for a reasonable price. It's a 5/8" 11TPI flat head bolt just like this (http://www.boltdepot.com/product.aspx?cc=10&cs=21&cm=6&cd=1717). Obviously I can just order it from this site, but I hate to pay 30 dollars for 2 bolts. I tried Ace hardware, Lowes, and HD, but none of them carry the bolt I need in the size I need. Anyone know of somewhere good to go for specialty bolts. Preferably in Atlanta, but if not local at least somewhere a little cheaper.

Thanks.

If it has to be 18-8, that's a pretty competitive price.

2.5-3.0 inch flathead 5/8-11 zinc plated steel bolts are a couple of dollars each on this site:
http://www.fastenal.com/web/products.ex?N=999600059+1199944065+1199936949&Nty=0

5/8" 18-8 SS are in the $20 range.

thanks that is exactly what I was looking for. I don't need stainless steel, that was just the only material that site had that size in stock. Thanks again.

I am always amazed at the amount of knowledge on this forum and the generosity of people to share that knowledge.

Don't know if you noticed, Stephen, but they do have a "brick & mortar" presence in Atlanta.

Fastenal is a excellent source. Another good place a little expensive but they have everything is Mcmaster Carr ( mcmaster.com)

Stephen, I’d be willing to bet that you don’t really need a Grade 8 bolt. A Grade 5 bolt has the advantage of not being as brittle and is nearly as strong. In many cases in the work I do (aerospace development), a Grade 5 bolt is preferred.

Just another option to look at.

Thanks for all the replies. The only reason I was using grade 8 bolts was that was what Ace Hardware had available, and I didn't know about the brittleness. I'll keep them anyway, but good to know.

Thanks for the link to McMaster, this looks like a great resource for the various things I'll be buying in the future, but unfortunately they stop at 1/2" for the type of bolt I need.

It looks like Fastenal is the best choice, and luckily there is a B&M near me so I should be able to give them a call to see if they have the part I want in stock.

Thanks again for all the help.

mscdirect.com is another source for bolts among other things.

Another option would be to ask if anyone here or especially over at owwm.org has any spares. I am guessing those are the bolts that hold the rear cast piece (that the column goes into) to the steel leg set? If that's the case I may have a couple if I can find them.

Try one of the two Fastenal Stores in Atlanta.
1432 Chattahoochee Ave.404 351 4759
6445 FoltonIndustrial Blvd. 404346 4528
Ask about plow bolts and Sockethead bolts in several grades.
Good luck

Stephen,

I strongly "second" the McMaster Carr suggestion from Carroll. They have absolutely everything, and their service is second to none. I live in Chattanooga and if I order something on line before noon I will have it in my hands the next day, regular shipping. If you can get your hands on their multi-thousand page catalog, it is an excellent reference.

Stephen,
Have you tried Grainger? They're on the south side on I-75 near Penney's outlet. McMaster-Carr will also have them but not sure they'll sell to you if you don't have an account with them. If they don't have it....you don't need it.

Thanks to everyone for the information, I ended up getting it a fastenal. Most of the other places I checked didn't end up having the size I needed. Also ordered some bearings from advanced bearings and they should get here Friday, then I can finish my RAS rebuild.
