Hey everyone, first post ever. As you can see I'm mike and live in Maine. Currently a sophmore in high school and running a DVR 3000.

It seems that I'm obligated to put up something I've turned:p

So here's my first real bowl, spalted white birch straight from the woodpile. I was lucky with the spalting and a bit unlikely because I left the pith in... oh well.

Up next to be turn is a 17" piece of black walnut and a piece of Texas Ebony. I'll post up a question regarding that in awhile.

Mike, Welcome to the Creek. Not sure how long you may have been lurking here but in case it's not too long you will find this place very helpful with your turning. And I'm very happy to see such a young man getting involved with the craft.

Love the bowl. You should see that you bowl may widen a bit on the sides with the pith but it should only add to this piece. Well done.

More important than the pith breaking down is your eye and technique. It is a very good bowl with nice lines and a fair curve.
Welcome to the Creek.

Mike - Welcome to the Creek!

Very nice bowl - especially for your first! Great form - wonderful spalting! You did a really nice job on it!

We do have a few high school turners on the Creek - hopefully they will jump in shortly and welcome you as well!

Nice bowl! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Also, you can edit your setting and list Maine as your location. Helps sometimes when folks offer advice.

Mike, We love to have nice young turners as yourself get on here and show us what you have been working on! Great looking bowl and one of my favorite woods to turn! I was in Maine about 28 years ago stopped at Kittery Point (Not sure of spelling) got some deep fried scallops from a small roadside shop, they were wonderful! It was winter and I was on leave from the Army on my way to Okinawa Japan. I spent a couple weeks in New Hampshire snowshoeing around the forest with a buddy who had a cabin there. He said we had to go up to Maine so we did, just an adventure for a couple of young soldiers!

Glad to have you in the vortex!

Jeff

Welcome to SMC Mike. Very nice looking bowl as is the wood. Well done for your first. Date it, sign it and keep it to compare with a year or two from now.

Welcome to the forum Mike. Excellent first bowl. The pith adds "character" to the piece (if it doesn't split). Hope you keep on turning. You have time to become one of the "great ones" some day.
