End Grain Bowls

Has anyone ever turned end grain cherry bowls with good results? Green to finish? Green to rough and seal?

Sean, I've never turned an end grain bowl but a friend of mine has done quite a few in Walnut. I believe he rough turned them and finished when dry.

Sean - thanks! That was a long time ago and I had to do some digging in the archives to find any photos. We still have that bowl and after a few years has developed a beautiful rich cherry color. Love that wood!

Here is what the bowl looks like now. It is a little rough around the edges but it has been used. Love the patina!

Check out Andre Martel's video on end grain bowls. Also, he has developed a tool specifically made for end grain.

I rough mine and the return to the lathe. The termite or hunter tool both work great on end grain.
