are any of the made in china engravers worth while or should one just stick to epilog or uls for a new machine about 24 x 12 in size 50 watt?

Best to a search here on that question. LOTS of opinions and answers. Many people feel that you get what you pay for. The Chinese machines may wel do what you want. Tech support, parts, and driver issues seem to be a bit more hassle for the non-USA machines.
