Alright I have a door that sits flush with the framework and I need a hinge that will move the door out a 1/2 inch before it starts to swing open. Is there such a hinge? and where can I get one?

If you go to the Blum web site you should be able to find a hinge like that there. They have detailed descriptions of all of their hinges and their application. Make sure that you find one with a 12mm or 1/2" overlay.

Hope that helps.

I tried looking apparently I haven't a clue what they are talking about when I read what type of hinge I need. Here's a quick drawing of what I'm trying to do. Can someone just tell be what hinge(s) will work on this application? thanks.http://api.photoshop.com/home_7597f43bc1cf43e59b7b221c6f90495f/adobe-px-assets/0070628d2c7042e38773b97bcd93ec0f (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/%3Cimg%20src=)http://www.sawmillcreek.org/%3Cimg%20src=%22http://api.photoshop.com/home_7597f43bc1cf43e59b7b221c6f90495f/adobe-px-assets/0070628d2c7042e38773b97bcd93ec0f%22%20width=%22563 %22%20height=%22216%22/%3Ehttp://www.sawmillcreek.org/%3Cimg%20src=%22http://api.photoshop.com/home_7597f43bc1cf43e59b7b221c6f90495f/adobe-px-assets/0070628d2c7042e38773b97bcd93ec0f%22%20width=%22563 %22%20height=%22216%22/%3E

Ah. The previous poster (and I) thought you'd be talking about a cabinet door. You're talking about a door that's 3 inches thick!

I don't know of a hinge that does exactly what you describe -- that is, pulls straight out 1/2", and then pivots. However, there are hinges which can handle a big door. For instance, there are the hinges that hold the front door in your house. Why can't you use them?

Don't give up yet.

Have you considered Soss hinges? They're completely hidden when closed. Soss makes some large enough to handle full-size people doors. http://www.soss.com/

There's also pivot hinges. They're commonly used on commercial doors, in retail shops, and at building entrances. There's no hinges on the jamb. Instead, the weight of the door is carried by a pivot on the floor. Rixson is the big name in this business: http://www.rixson.com/ You can see a few (non-Rixson) pivot hinges on http://www.hardwaresource.com/Store_ViewCatLevel3.asp?Cat=25
