I got the idea for this piece while watching the David Marks episode where he builds the koa lamp. That was two and a half years ago, I've been refining the ideas in my head for all that time! With two small kids in the house I just don't have a lot of time for my hobbies. The construction took me around 6 months. Most of the time was spent making jigs and forms, and figuring out how on earth to make the next cut. Joining two curved pieces with a mortice and tenon, is umm, not easy the first time :).

The upright is made from an 8/4x9"x8' board, resawn and glued with DAP weldwood. The tension on those curves is just crazy, but the weldwood locked it in perfectly. I laminated a bookmatched pair of veneers onto 1/4" plywood for the mirror back. The finish is seal-a-cell and arm-r-seal, buffed with paste wax.

I'll attach some construction photos in a second post.

David

P.S. Taking pictures of mirrors is hard!

Construction photos. These show the cardboard mockup that I used to generate dimensions, gluing up the upright, details of the underside and the final glue-up which is held together with glue and dowels.

While I don't care for the contemporary designs that Marks uses, his technique and art are beyond question. You did a great job of capturing that element with this piece. Wonderful art, and great execution. And.... dang, what a process!!!

I thought my flat work glue ups were a pain! I will never complain again. Well, I probably will, but you know what I mean!:D

I, too, am not a huge fan of the more modern styles but this is excellent... reminds me of a Thos. Moser piece!

Thanks for sharing!

thats an amazing mirror. it seems like its defying gravity a bit. my first thought was "how is it not falling over front wards?"

again, incredible design.

Very nice design and execution! I can see why it took you awhile. I, too, have to think awhile on some projects before I feel comfortable "pulling the trigger" and cutting wood.
I also like your hardwood floors!!
