I have a Jet 16-42 lathe, a small shop, no wall space and a nice space under the lathe. Has any one build a tool rack in that space? Dominic Greco built a great blast box for under there. But I need some ideas for a tool storage. Any thoughts accepted.

Thanks
Ben

Ben - I built a ballast box based on Dominic's design and have been happy using that. A number of folks have built tool storage (think cabinets with drawers) under their lathes - should be able to find them doing a search. Keep in mind you will want to keep some leg room so you can get close enough to the lathe on some of your turnings.

This is what I did for my jet 1442...Bill..

I would suggest something closed as there is a lot of shavings and dirt. I built a box and keep it full of heavy tools like oversize wrenches, pipe and combination, heavy pry bars and that kind of stuff. I had them in a toolbox that I couldn't lift so..........:)

I have seen some nice storage boxes on this board. I was thinking of something simple just to hold the tools. I know it will get messy but I don't have much room else where for the tools.

I have a cabinet built to go under the lathe. But then I also have a tool rack over the lathe too. There are a lot of things that can be stored in the cabinet. As you have the lathe longer you will be sucked into the vortex of buying more and more tools and accessories to fill whatenver size drawers you build.

Ben,
How about a ballast box plus tool storage? You could build a ballast box like Dominic but make it slightly thinner. Then you could add a nice tool storage cabinet to the front of the ballast box (of a similar design to the one Ron B built in his post http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=125736 ). I'd probably keep the doors closed while turning though.

Food for thought?

I have recently purchased the Jet 1642, should be delivered today, I too am interested in the using the area below the lathe for storage. I like the two designs by William Bolen and Rick Hutcheson in this thread. I was considering making a box about 6-8" deep at the very bottom for ballast then setting the tool storage cabinet on top of that. Finally on top of the cabinet a tray about 3-4" deep to catch shavings that fall directly below the bed. I'll have to determine if the weight of the cabinet and tools alone would provide sufficient ballast, if so, that would provide more tool storage space. Hummm good reason to purchase additional accessories. Well anyway, If I get it worked out I will post the pics.

Check out the American Woodworker magazine issue 137, September 2008 there is a great lathe tool storage cabinet that Ray Lanham designed and built. It has a built in ballast box that adds about 200 pounds to your lathe.
