I am building a headboard with several flat panels in it. I would like to make the panels from curly maple but have not been able to find any high figure pieces.

I am now considering using a veneer over MDF but have not used any veneers in the past.

Any guidance/suggestions would be appreciated. A few specific questions:

1) any disadvantages to PSA - - being a newbe, is this the simplist approach?

2) There seems to be many veneer sources. What has your experience been with them? Much variation in supply?

3) How bad is the learning curve?

Your input is appreciated.

If you're just starting with veneer, I'd recommend you do some sample panels with cheap veneer first.

Also, you need to figure out how you're going to press it. There's a big learning curve on veneer. PVA will work but you have to work fast and get it into press before it set or skims over. I use PVA on a lot of my veneer work but there are other glues which are needed for certain jobs.

If you have someone near you who does veneer, it would help you get up to speed faster if they will assist you.

Regarding veneer sources, I use Certainly Wood and can recommend them highly.
