I am looking for maple for a Charles Brock rocking chair.

I can get 8/4 maple for $4.25/bf, 4/4 curly for $8, and 4/4 birdseye for $11.

What I need for the project is some 8/4 figured or birdseye for select parts of the rocker. My lumber supplier - Reel Lumber - doesn't have any.

Do you have any tried and true suppliers either through the internet or in Southern California for 8/4 figured or birdseye maple?

Thanks in advance.

Brian

Brian-
Not sure how close they are to you, but have you checked

Austin Hardwood
610 N Santiago St, Santa Ana, CA‎
(714) 953-4000

Have you considered walnut? I know the 8/4 regular maple is a might cheaper than the 8/4 walnut, but if you are considering BE or Curly Maple for the show parts, they can get way more expensive than 8/4 walnut - like in the $13-16 range.

Austin has 8/4 Walnut at 7.42/bf. That rocker requires about 40-50 bf. If you purchase > 50bf, the price drops a little to 6.89...

Budget notwithstanding, I find walnut easier to machine and work with hand tools.

Hearne Hardwoods will ship UPS internet bundles, but that'd be sight unseen, and you'll pay a good amount for anything.

Try bellforestproducts.com They are an Upper Michigan co. that I use a lot. They specialize in birdseye and curly maple. Ask for Boone or Eric.

Brian,

I picked up 8/4 figured maple a year ago or so at one of the two lumber yards below. I'm pretty sure it was Bonhoff.

+1 for curlymaple.com Very dependable...pics on the website and I have never had a problem. For high figure check out the "private stock" pages...not cheap, but you get waht you pay for, and for me it is worth it.

Check out this site. They have quite a collection of highly figured maples.
The only thing I know about this place is they have a great reputation from what I've seen through the WW Forums....

Gilmer Wood (Maples) (http://www.gilmerwood.com/instrument_wood-maples.htm)

I don't work for these folks or anything..... just passing along.... I think they're out in Oregon.

Beautiful stuff, though.....

The North Eastern part of the country has a lot of maple, so these guys might be worth phoning, and since they sponsor our forum, it would be nice to support them if possible.
