I know this is going to seem silly, but I finally tried the compression fitting ferule idea from Ron McKinley's article: http://www.thompsonlathetools.com/handles.asp
on my new P&N roughing gouge and am tickled with the result:

Simple shape - apple wood. While the tool fit snugly, I used some epoxy just to make it super secure.
I recomment McKinley's method. It's fun, and makes a nice handle to use. Cheers!
