The domed base for the finial, as well as the inset design, was inspired by a couple of pieces Keith Burns' has turned. Mesquite is one of my favorite woods to turn... cuts like butter and sands/finishes very easy. All comments - good, bad, or ugly - are welcome.

This is a very nice piece. I think the simple (yet elegant) lines of the finial compliment the classic shape of the mesquite hollow form. Very nice.

Mark,

I like your piece and the final is great. I don't know where you are getting your mesquite, but most of the mesquite I have found does not cut anything like butter. Some can dull my tools faster than anything I have turned, especially the lower trunk sections. BUT it does finish well and the grain character is outstanding wood.

Thomas, I believe I got this wood from Ernie Nyvall and I think he lives in New York City (or Houston... I don't remember which). I'm sure he obtained it by illegal means. ;)

Maybe it's because this is turned end-grain? I dunno, but it sure cut easy. I've turned a few pieces of Mesquite and I don't recall any of them being too hard/tough.

Beautiful piece. Mesquite reminds me of Chechen with the coloring and grain. I particularly like the shape of the finial.

The form and fairly simple finial, make this a very appealing piece! Great woods and finish. The photo shows it all very well.
