I was given a piece of wood that was from a tree in Kentucky, very close to the Mammoth Caves. The color of the wood is very similar to Walnut but with small steaks of blonde color in the wood. This wood has the grain structure of Walnut but not the look. Can anyone from the Mammoth
Caves area or someone from Kentucky tell me what the species of this wood is? I would gladly supply some pictures of the wood. I don't have the wood in original log form but I do have some pictures that would provide clues.

Thanks,

Dan Meek

Pecan maybe? I know someone here in Louisville had pecan trunk pieces for free. It seems to have yellow bands to it.

Pics would help, because you just described about 30 different species of wood ;). But I'll take a shot in the dark and say it's Coffeetree :D.

i purchased a piece of coffeetree a few weeks ago - yellowish in color and large grain. not at all like walnut.

It sounds like Butternut.
