good question, I recently used my 4-1/2" grinder with a 1/4" grinding wheel to rough it out (what an ugly mess), then finished with a rasps and sanders. It was time consuming and I was thinking "there has to be a better way than this"

this is the set I used

I'll be watching this post for a better way

I think you want to start with a Scorp and then work your way to a rasp. Or, a ball mill in a die grinder if you want to do it with power tools.

A gouge or a curved knife blade would be much faster and more effective than a curved rasp.

Agreed. I made one spoon in my life. Bought my one gouge for the effort after stuggling with other methods. Worked great once I sharpened it.

I'm sure others with more experience (than my measely one spoon) will chime in, but a gouge is made for this type of work.

Cool thing is, you don't even need to be all that accurate. Draw the spoon on your blank, then gouge out the middle. Adjust the drawing as necessary, then cut out the rest of the spoon around it!!!!

A dremel or Foredom would work great too and can be used for a great many other things. They also make quick work of the finish sanding necessary after your work with the gouge. I mean, it's called a gouge for a reason. :D
