Well, I have found that I truly got sucked into this vortex. I just ordered the monster with 18" extension kit from Sean at Toolnut. :D:D:D

I have been reading alot of the posts over the last few weeks of which lathe to buy and found that this will best replace my 1949 shopsmith for turning. The shopsmith gave me a great taste of woodturning, but I am tired of fighting its weaknesses.

I just can't wait to see the delivery truck in the driveway!!

Congratulations Keith! Your will REALLY, REALLY like this lathe. I've had mine for a year and a half and I cannot see how I managed to work on the older lathe I had.

It'l be like Christmas morning waiting for that delivery truck to roll up to your house.

Well I got my 18" extension today!! But the lathe is on backorder, talk about torment:( Having that thing sitting on the bench just waiting to be mounted. I should have the lathe by the end of the month though:D

And here is the proof I got the extension!

You could take it out of the box and decorate it with Christmas lights like I did my lathe! Might make you feel better!

I'm in the same situation, enjoying my new 18" bed extensions sans lathe. They must have sold a lot of them.

Well I left work for a couple hours to take delivery of the lathe:D:D:D.

Then had to head back to work and will spend the evening opening it up.

Unfortunately when the truck arrived the power lines were too low:eek:, good thing I had a stack of OSB laying around;)

You can start collecting green logs now rather than OSB.

I love my monster.

Well when I got home this afternoon, I couldn't open the box fast enough! I borrowed a pallet jack from work to move the crate in the shop and borrowed my dad's HF lift cart to assemble the lathe. The whole process went much quicker than I thought. I had to call my dad and ask him to pick up a plug on his way over. Here are a few shots of the assembly and my little helpers.

I agree the Mustard machine will keep you turning for a long time to come! I love mine and the old Shopsmith is in great condition too! Still a viable tool to have around. Have fun and the kids will have something to look forward to when they get to turn on that nice new machine. It will be around a long time.

Keith, good setup with the Shopsmith and the PM!!:D You can work on being ambidextrous and turn two pieces at once!!

BTW, looks like you have a nice shop there, and the shop apprentices really look happy with the new family purchase!

Even with the modifications the grey machine looks puny. Good thing it's in the foreground.:D

I'm a big fan of back savers like the ones shown in your photos. The pallet jack doesn't take up much room when the forks are stored under something, and the lift table makes a great horizontal surface for collecting stuff when not in use. Although, there are many uses for the lift table such as moving the monster when necessary or lifting your big brother.

Enjoy!

Thanks John! I am thinking about shortening the way tubes on the shopsmith so it will take up less room. I can't get rid of it as I still use it for the disk sander and to power my jointer. I also think I may use it for the buffing rather than the Mustard.

Thanks, on the shop comment too. I really need to work on building a seperate space for the woodworking though, it doesn't mix very well with the hotrodding stuff.

I am blessed that my boys love spending time in the shop with me! Some of my fondest memories are from spending time in the shop with my dad and learning everything he would teach me. He is a cabinet maker by trade and a Hotrodding hobbiest. Like father like son!!:D:D

We are on the same schedule because mine was also delivered yesterday. Together with my teenage daughter, we got it out of the driveway and assembled in the shop using only a furniture dolly and our brawny strength. Progress has halted until I get a 220V plug.
