The first of my two weekend classes is behind me now.
And I finally understand the tools a lot better now.

The whole weekend was really exercises.
Learning how to make a bonker which was beads and coves.
A little vase and a big knob to follow a pattern.
Then a goblet to learn a little hollowing.
We finished up with a bowl.

The main thing I did learn was I don't have to fight the wood with the tools.
Doing it right sure is a lot easier....
And not near as many catches!

Next weekend we do a bunch of bowls...

Ah.... the mark of a true turner... already using your tablesaw to display your turnings!

Congrats on the class! Looks like you paid attention quite well and probably shaved a year off your learning curve!

Looking forward to seeing your bowls next week!

Gary, I am surprised that Geri even lets you out of the house to get near tools after your most recent "diversion!!":D:D

And, I'm not at all sure that I want to eliminate skates and catches. At my age, one has to find exhilaration and excitement wherever one can!;) They sort of give that adrenaline rush that I use to get doing things a bit higher on the danger scale.

Great job on the study projects, and I think SMC rules require that you post pics of all the bowls completed during this class!

Gary, I love what you have learned and the sharing of your experience with us here on the Creek! The statement you made about not "Fighting" the tools is the perfect way to get across to new and old tuners alike, let the tool do the work and the results will be good!

Great turnings and a good instructor was involved!

Congrats on your class. Great job. I agree with Jeff. What you said will help old and new alike. Don't fight the tools. Sharpen your tools and let them do the work makes it a lot more enjoyable. Have fun.

Pretty neat, always fun to learn and makes turning go a lot easier. John, about those skates, they are exciting and I don't think you have much age on me, but when I turn the skates away the piece gets so small. As far as I know there is not a way to put the wood back.:D

Thanks for the support everyone.

Charlie.
The weekend classes are put on by a company called Black Forest Wood Company. They have a great setup for teaching with 6 oneways and a couple of vicmarcs set up.

And yes John, bad place for someone like me to go into.
They also have a very nice show room with all the lathe toys and lots and lots of tuning blanks.....
My 3520 is pretty well set up now.......

Uh...John....are you badmouthing Mustard Monsters?
:rolleyes:Ken, would a guy "driving" a HF 34706, badmouth anything remotely better than that??!!??:D They are all Porches compared to my clunker!:o

Just suggesting that, if cost is at all relative to quality (something I know nothing about in this instance evidenced by my lack of quality ownership), then the OneWay MUST be better than the PM

Oh, Crap!! Just figured out that not only have I stirred a mustard yellow hornets nest, I now have all the 34706 owners joining forces against me!

I knew I should have kept my mouth shut!

I forgot to tell you John....
I know you were looking for another lathe.
And I took the liberty to order one of those two for you.:D

Shipping is a bit steep from up here but that bleeding will stop quickly.

Let us know what Terry from Black Forest sends you.;)

Yes, but can the Powermatic double as a hyperbaric chamber? Given that Michael Jackson is said to have spent hundreds of thousands of $$$ on oxygen therapy, one would think that getting a chamber that can also do bowls would be a good two'fer.
