Slightly spalted... the smaller one has antique oil on it and the bigger one has lacquer. Not enough difference in color to make much difference, so will probably use AO on any more of this wood that I turn.

Both look great, really like that Ogee shape, my opinion is that the AO really brings the color out of the grain much better.

Nailed both of those.
That is the style of bowls I really like.
Thanks for posting those.

Mark, The bowls are very nice! The simple shapes show the wood and all of it natural beauty. The thing about AO is that when you continue to put more coats on it it will give the grain depth and a softer warmer feel. With lacquer it is fast and a little stiff and just gives the wood a shine, but not the glow of oils that soak in deeper and dry from the inside out. It takes a little more time to get the desired look but well worth it.

Great job on both and expierement with the finishes and you will find out all the secrets that time plays a part in!

Thanks all. Jeff, the lacquer was applied in a couple of thick coats with a rag (not sprayed) and then rubbed in/off. It soaked in just about the same as the AO, because the wood was so dry/pourous. I knew the AO would darken the wood, so I was trying to keep the lighter color by using the lacquer. What I found - and you can see in the pictures - is that it didn't make much difference.

I like both bowls but prefer the first... not sure why but I like the overall proportions better I think. I also like the coloring of the oil finished piece a little better. I'd be proud to say I turned either of them.
