 I'm having a terrible time shaping the base of a wine glass. I keep getting catches whether I use a spindle gouge or spindlemaster. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jim - Welcome to the Creek! If possible - post a few photos of your problem area and someone here should be able to point you in the right direction.

Here is a tutorial on posting photos - just in case: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=25115

I am guessing that "direction of cut" might be the problem. When spindle turning, cut from large diameter towards smaller diameter. Someone will offer better advise if you can give us more detail on the problem you are having.

I don't know your experience level; I'm primarily a bowl turner and I've been learning to be a spindle turner for the last few months. One thing that I really wish I'd learned sooner is to keep the tool height quite a bit higher than center-line as with bowl turning. Always cut high to low. Keep the gouges SHARP. Honing is vital here, I've found. My $0.02.

Agree with all suggestions, especially height of the tool rest. Much better to be too high than too low.

Welcome and hope we can help! If you can get a picture of what you are turning and how you are addressing the wood we can make a better explanation of what to do.

We are glad to help,

Jeff

Jim,

I don't know if you have seen this video or not http://www.woodcraft.com/Family/2000681/Cherry/videos.aspx#videos

I used it and turned a goblet stem with a glass goblet as wedding gift for my daughter. I was one of my early turning projects. This video is what gave me the idea.
