I cut this wood out of a walnut tree that had a lot of rot, it rather fragile but it is quite beautiful. I wanted the wood to stand on its own merit, so I made the joinery as simple as I could. It is just v-grooved with a 45 degree shaper cutter and glued, and then finished with wiping poly. The lid is sliding.

Wow! That is some beautiful walnut - really a lot going on with the grain. Were you able to get much out of the tree? I don't turn bowls, but looks like that would make some nice bowl stock.

Beautiful grain and I like the simplicity... simple is good!

As a fellow box maker I love the look of that box.

Unfortunately most of the wood out of that tree was either rotten or really straight grain (which I'm using for other projects), but I have a few more pieces out of it. I'm making peppermills out of some of the figured sections that are turnable.

Thanks for the comments!
