One additional "tweak" (okay, not tweak, but method), is to do the grinding on the side of the wheel so the grind marks go parallel with the screw slot. I have some screwdrivers ground this way (and also some gunsmith types, with the blade milled) and they hold very wel).
Junior Stasill mentioned this just the other day here on SMC by the way.
Good quality slotted screws are stil available from the likes of MSC and McMaster-Carr, by the way.
