I got this wood from a friends wood pile, the colored center caught my eye. He had cut the tree out of his motherinlaws yard. He believes it was a pear tree but is not sure and the motherinlaw has passed away so cannot ask her. The grain is much like oak but finer and I love the color and contrast with the light and redish center. I have not found and posting of any pear wood that looks like this.
The bowl is 4 1/2 by 1 3/4 inches, it was sanded to 400 grit and finished with mineral oil and bees wax paste.

I don't think it is Pear....Looks like it might be Chinaberry. What ever it is, it looks great. Nice Job.

I don't know if it's pear, but I like it.

Haven't turned Pear before - so can't help you there. Sure is a pretty bowl though! Great colors and I really like the contrast between the heartwood and sapwood! Nice work!

Great looking bowl. I do like the heart wood and sap wood contrast. I agree it kinda does look like chinaberry I turned a while back.

Doesn't look like any pear I've turned. The grain seems a little too pronounced. Plus, the pear I've turned has turned like absolute butter. Whatever it is, it's pretty. Love the contrast.

Looks like Honey Locust to me, show us the bark, that would help make it easier to ID it.

I agree with Leo. I just turned some Honey Locust and IMO it looks just like that.

I agree with both of them... The bark view would help though.

Here is the bark pictures. On the exotic wood ID site it looks much like the lilac, the chinaberry (only a few pictures) looks like the sapwood is darker??

Honey locust X3. Bark is a ringer. Thorns?? (they don't always have them--I've seen a few trees without, but usually very long)

There are no thorns. Here is a honey locust with thorns. This is a young tree so the bark is different but even on the smaller branches the bark had a rougher look to it.

I vote for honey locust based on the bark and the redish orange heartwood with white sapwood! You'll know for sure if you are doing the twice turned method. The HL will be very hard once it is dry (about as hard as hickory/pecan or purpleheart)!

I've never seen a chinaberry tree so I could be wrong!
