a guy i work with has some? how does it turn? what is grain like?

Cody, here (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=43426&page=2) is a bowl that Nathan Talley did in sassafras. I have a board of it that was given to me as a test board, but I haven't done anything with it. The grain appears similar to ash, but the color is more like ash with coffee dye applied - very light tan.
I should add that it is much softer, and light in weight.

Easy to turn and sand.+ it smells good.

Agree with Roy, turns well although I've only done a couple and the smell is wonderful. Nice grain, too! Best to you in your endeavors with it.

turns easily, softer than ash, but with the same type grain, brown

I like turn Sassafrass --- it smells good. Here is a rolling Pen I turned from Sassafras.
