I am trying to find out if the bed angle is the same on both these planes.

I was lead to believe that the 102 was 12* and the 103 was 20*.

Did Lie-Nielsen just decide to make his 102 at a new angle of 12*?

Is it possible that they made the same plane with two different bed angles?

Thanks.

not sure exact bed angles but I had a 103 and it was a standard angle plane

the 102 was a low angle. so I believe LN in parallel with stanley's versions

I really liked my 103 and was sad when I sold it but it went to a good home.

From looking at the pictures of both on the blood and gore site, it looks like they have the same bed angle. Mr Leach states that the 103 does have a 20° bed angle in his description of it. LN does improve on stanley designs so its understandable that their 102 would be a low angle plane. Their version of the 140 uses a low angle bed whereas stanley's uses 20°.

Both use a 20* angle (see pic)

My 103 has a permanent spot in my workshop. Very handy little plane.

Cheers all,
Stu

The reason for the confusion may be that perhaps the 102's came in both bed angles.

I don't think Stanley made standard angle and low angle 102. I don't think it's in their practice to make different type of planes with the same model number. At least they added -1/2 or a whole number for a variation.

By the way, the one in that picture isn't low angle. Look at the blade angle between blade bevel and lever cap. It's a lot steeper than low angle block plane. With a low angle block plane, that part of blade looks to be bedded a lot flatter than that (yes I know that big silvery part isn't a blade, it's the dark small part).

So is it the case that Stanley never made a low angle version of this plane?

I think that Miller Falls made a no. 5 that was a low angle version of this plane, but I will have to do some more surfing to see what comes up.

Thanks everyone.

Perhaps you are confused with the Lie-Nielsen 102 which is 12 degree, and not like the Stanley which is 20 degrees.
Perhaps Thomas Lie-Nielsen got the idea for the 102 from the Miller Falls #5?

The only millers falls planes that are low angle are the 46,47, 56,57, 66, 206B 1455 and 8455, all of which are adjustable. All their non adjustable planes are, like their stanley equivalents, standard angle.
