View Full Version : Completed my Wilton 20" VS DP restoration

So this is what I finished out with, a Wilton 2015 20" VSG drill press originally sold for $5500.00 new, I bought this one on eBay for $600.00 + $278.00 shipping + $125.00 misc supplies (paints,wire etc) for a grand toatl of $1003.00 about what Powermatic wants for their chinese made 18" VS DP. Here's the specs::)

7" quill travel
1 1/2 HP Baldor HD motor
80-1200 RPM
4 1/2" column
cast iron quill stop/clamp, (solid and accurate)
Huge cast iron work table 18"x25"
quill clamp, holds the quill in an extended position .
height = 80"
weight = 770 lbs

The previous owner painted over the original paint with battleship gray and used what appeared to be a small mop, very unsightly. Much better now!

That looks to be built for some use. Should be good till the year 2225 at least.

That is a drill press to drool over! (maybe after it gets a good coat of wax and won't rust that is...)

And I don't think the powermatic can spin under 300 or so RPM. I would much rather have your press!

That's one of the best looking drill presses that I have seen and I was a machinist for a lot of years!

Yea, This drill press is 18 years old and mechanically was in excellent condition, I popped the metal shields off the bearings cleaned and greased with premium Caterpillar hi speed ball bearing grease now she purrs. The quill has very little clearance (slop) in the head and can be taken out (0.000") with the quill clamp, this was the main reason for going away from Asian DP's too much slop in the quill (soft cast iron)my 10 year old Jet 17" DP had over 1/16" (started @ 1/32") and wobbled like crazy at hi speed.
