How does one post and image that was previouly posted in a different thread?

If I try to upload it the second time, it tells me, "Hey dummy, you've already done that". This is so smart that even if I change the name of the pic it gives me the same reply.:o

Thanks,
Jim

The last time I did it, as I recall, I went to the post that contained the image, copied the image to the clipboard (Ctrl + C for PC types, don't know for Macs, et.al) and pasted it into the post where I wanted to dupe it. The image doesn't even have to be one you posted. Here's one I just picked at random from an existing thread.http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=132420&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1257892228 (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=132420&d=1257892228)

Don't know what that does to storage space on the SMC server, but there are other ways to link to the existing image. Perhaps a moderator/administrator could suggest a convenient way to reference existing images without expanding server storage requirements.

I do sorta as Tom describes. I just click on the link that shows up in the "Hey dummy, you've already done that" message, expand the pic I am after, copy the "image location" and past it in here (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=132420&d=1257892228) for example. I did this on the example pic Tom used above.

I think a nice feature for Vbulletin to consider would be changing the function of the error to say "Hey dummy, you've already done that, would you like to post a link to that picture instead?" Then we just have to click Ok and move on.

Tom,

"Random" you say!!

That's the pic I was trying to post! I had to resize it as a different size and then it was uploaded.

Thanks Glenn. My "random" jointer is getting a lot of air time:)

I'm waiting to see how many other ways you can do this that may be easier that I can remember.

Jim, et al,
I simply recrop the image slightly, then I can upload it as usual.

There is no need to re-upload images - that's just a waste of space. If you go to your SMC User Control Panel - User CP on the SMC main menu bar - there is a link at the very bottom of the list that says Attachments. Click on this to get a list of all the attachments you have uploaded. You then right click on the name of desired attachment, and select Copy Link Location. Then when writing your new message, click the regular Insert Image button (or type in the formatting codes that others have shown), and paste in that location you previously copied. The other methods of getting to URL for the picture also work just as well, it just depends on if it's easier to find the thread where the image was posted, or just to get it off your attachment list.

Jeff,

OK, here's a test.

I got the list of my previous attachments, did the right click on one of them, clicked on "copy shortcut", no "copy link location" option. Went back to the thread and clicked the "Insert Image" icon, did the paste thing and this is what I get.

Looks like a red "X" in the preview.

Like you said, in Internet Explorer, the menu selection is Copy Shortcut - it's called Copy Link Location in Firefox. When you get to the list of attachments, you should also be able to click on the name of any picture file and see it pop-up in a new window. This verifies that the image is really there on the SMC server. Then when you paste the link into the Insert Image pop-up, it should look something like this - http://sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=113543&d=1237504884

and you should see the image in the message you are editing
http://sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=113543&d=1237504884
(just a drawing that was relevant to another thread...)

Thanks for your patients Jeff.

We'll try again.

Looks like the same thing. When I click on the .jpg file in my attachments the pictures does come up. When I right click copy and paste in the pop up box I get a similar link as you described. When I click the "OK" the red "X" appears in the message.

I must be missing something here. I'm sure it's something simple but it eludes me.

Another image:

http://sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=115731&d=1239757185

If the whole link is pasted into the pop-up image dialog, or you paste the link in between manually entered image formatting codes ( link ), I don't know what else could be wrong... Unfortunately, I'm at a loss for additional suggestions.

Jeff,

A light just went on as I tried for the umpteenth time.

Could it be my status is member and not contributor???

If that is the problem I'll have to wait a few days. I mailed a check this morning.

Well, I'm now a contributor but I still get the red "X".:confused::eek::rolleyes::(

Anyone got any more suggestions??

I'm sure the KISS theory fits in here some place. I just don't know where.
