View Full Version : A New Shop Completed, part 1

Since August, I’ve been building a new wood shop. It’s a 22’x26’ extension onto my garage. I needed it because my machines were divided between my garage and basement, necessitating hauling big boards up and down stairs as well as a multitude of other inconveniences.

I did not want just a box-in-the-backyard. I wanted light, headroom, and ventilation as well as an interesting style, so I came up with a clerestory design reminiscent of an old factory. I have 14 machines I regularly use, including some large 3 phase machines, so the shop has three types of circuitry—120V, 240v single phase, and 240V three phase. A large door into the shop from the garage will (eventually) allow the next owner to park a car in the shop, so if he’s into cars instead of wood he’ll still pay a premium.

Anyway, on with the show. Here’s my back yard before construction:

The trenching and foundation pour went pretty quickly:

The framing started the day after the pour:

The clerestory is primarily held up by two big laminated beams—6x18’s I think.

This is where I really started working, putting up the insulation on the inside.

A friend and I put up the drywall. Not as bad as I feared, but only because of the lift.
