What’s the best way to remove the sanding disc from a 12” disk sander? The disc that is on there now is REALLY on there!

I picked up a used sanding center last weekend (gloat) :D

Goo gone will remove the adhesive once you remove the disc. Turpentine will also soak through the disc but that is a last resort. Gotta be careful where you use the turp. It can damage plastic and is flammable of course.

Bruce,

My first thought was heat as well. Sounds like someone used the wrong glue - like contact cement

Good luck and congrats on the new tool.

What was I thinking, sheesh, must be my day job getting the better of me ;). Chris you are right MAPP is the next best thing than placing the whole unit into a 3200º kiln. That should vaporize the disk right off, along with the paint, oil, coils, insulation hehehe ;)

Bruce -

WD-40 works for some other things like that. Give it a try. Obviously wipe down with solvent prior to the next disk.

Regards,
Ted

Thanks guys. I think I'll try the heat gun approach and if that doesn't work I'll try the WD-40. I'll save the MAPP gas as a last resort...

MAPP gas....sheesh!

Anothewr thought might be denatured alcohol. I don't know what it does to anything else but it might do the trick on the glue.

I put a heat lamp on it (not too close) and let it heat up for about an hour, it peeled/tore off nicely. A little mineral spirits cleaned it up like new!

Thanks!

Bruce.....you gotta remember that the MAPP gas idea came from a guy who lives in a place where they like to do things in a big way....... :p
