How much are you guys paying for red oak? I was quoted $2.60 for 4/4 S2S 13/16". Boards are 8' long and between 8" and 9" wide. Is this a reasonable price (I'm in the SF Bay Area where most things cost more than the national average).

thx

MacBeth's Hardwood in San Jose. You need either a contractor's license or a business license. I had neither but the guy let it slide....I think they're hurting for business in this economy. They get their wood from Indiana in large quantities. The wood looks nice. They wholesale to Southern Lumber, the largest hardwood retailer in the South Bay. MacBeth has stores in SF and Berkeley as well. I think the SF yard deals primarily in rough sawn, and the Berkeley site is geared more toward the retail side (S4S). The SJ site is a mixture.

Hey Brian,

Go to Reel Lumber in Riverside. I just paid $1.85 for Red oak C1F 4"-5".

$2.35 for FAS1F&BTR

$3.02 for 10" & wider.

This is with a 10% discount for belonging to Inland Valley Woodworkers, which meets there....first tuesday. Ask for Tom, nice guy.

FYI: Poplar was $1.50, and BB ply was $19.05 a sheet for 1/2".

You all might not like me... i got some really nice red oak for free... guessing right at 200 board feet. I guy bought a house not to far from me and the original owners had 2 large boats that they took apart. The boats happened to be made of red oak. I just love the free deals. I did have to pay for this other good deal but it wasnt to bad. I got around 300 board feet of brazilian walnut mixed with Jarrah for 64 bucks..

$1.80 a board foot in my local Atlanta area. $3.40 I believe for QSRO.. I would think that is an excellent price for California though as everything is much more expensive there from my experience.

The one in San Jose is fairly new -- sometime in the past two years. They'll sell to anybody.

I've bought from Mac Beath in San Jose. No contractor's licence needed, competitive prices. I like the Oakland location much better for variety / selection. I also like the trip to Watsonville in the fall to visit Jackel Enterprises, also competitive prices and good selection.

$1BF, any width, usually 4/4. Actually I can get any native species for that price right now.
