On Fri, Nov. 13th I am going to cut down a walnut tree on my property. The trunk is about 24" in diameter and pretty rotted which is why it's coming down. It isn't any good for lumber but it has several crotches and pretty good sized limbs with crotch wood.
If anyone is in the area of Mckinney TX. you are welcome to come by and help yourself. Anything that is still on the ground Sunday afternoon will go into the burn pile.

Just be careful of spikes and nails and stuff. If it's near the house or driveway or...

It's liable to have been part of a fencerow or have some kind of hardware in it somewhere...

I recently visited a local wood source (mill that specializes in claro walnut) and stared at several large slabs of walnut from an old tree that had run its course and had to come down. The trunk was 48" and the wood was astounding. I didn't want to leave.

Well, if Richard is too far away, I'm certainly too far away. Very tempting though!

I don't think that I will find anything in the tree. We have just under 5 acres and the tree isn't close to any fences or the house. I do intend to be careful though. This isn't my first tree by a long shot but chainsaws always demand respect.

Steve,

As I am sure you are aware, the rotted nature of the trunk makes it dangerous to fell because the hinge may be rotten and not control the direction of fall of the tree.

Take precautions and post a picture for us!

What is the world coming to when you can't give away a bunch of black walnut.....lol.

Giving it away would be real easy if I was just a little closer.

I'm going for some. I've been wanting to get some Walnut turning blanks for NE bowls and stuff. I figure the gas burned is way less than what I would pay for it locally...if I could find it locally.

Ironically, this evening my wife told me that a friend had called while I was at work telling me that he had a Walnut tree die if I wanted to cut it down for the wood. So, looks like I will be flush with Walnut for a while. :)

Just wanted to rejuvenate this in case there is anyone out there who didn't see it and might be interested.

As a follow up, I saw Steve's tree last Thursday, and it will certainly have some very nice turning wood! There are several crotches, etc. Easy to get to, and load, as well.

Steve - that is a very generous offer! I hope to be able to see some photos from who-ever is lucky enough to score some of that Walnut!

Hope all goes well!
