Search youtube, there is a guy that has a homemade one he sells the plans for through his site, Its basicly a wolverine made out of wood. I am in the process of making it myself..

try http://www.aroundthewoods.com Darrell Feltmate's home pages. He probably has some good descriptions and pictures on there.

You can head for free over to www.aroundthewoods.com. That is Darrell Feltmate's turning site. He has some plans there. I built his 2 or so years ago and it works great! Then a buddy of mine made 2 out of steel. One for himself, after I got him hooked on turning, and one for me. I still haven't switched over to it yet but it is tops on my list of things to do.

Wish I would have found that one earlier.. Nice design as well!
To the OP. Here is a great video on sharpening tools as well, you will notice that the plans linked above are just about the same as the wolverine used in the video. http://www.woodworkingonline.com/2008/09/23/podcast-37-turning-tools-sharpen-your-skills-with-sharp-tools

The video is about an hour long but covers all the tools and have a lot of great advice in it.

Ok I must be blind. I see a picture of the jig but I dont see the plans for it. I think I could build without the plans but it woulf be nice. Can you point me to it?

Thanks

when I get home later tonight i'll check my records for photos and/or plans for a home made sharpening jig which resembles the wolverine.

It looked cool, but I never built it because I splurged and bought the Tormek system a few years ago.

Sure. It begins here on this page:
http://www.aroundthewoods.com/sharpening01.html

Make sure to look for the "Next" link at the bottom. They are at times small and difficult to notice but there are at time up to 8 pages in each of his designs. Darrell has lots of cool things you can make to use with woodturning in general on his site. The more general page showing the titles of all is found here:

I just made this one. http://www.harderwoods.com/gougejigdoc.html and have been very happy with it. I've got the Wolverine system and vari-grind at the shop but couldn't see laying out that money again for my midi at home.

This one was cheap and easy and I can duplicate the grinds I get at the shop with the vari-grind.

and does the job as well or better than commercial jigs. Made lots of them for club members.

Lots of other sharpening info there too.

I learned that you don't need a jig to sharpen your bowl gouges. If you look at Mike Mahoney's You Tube video on sharpening, you notice he does it on a platform on the grinder. Veritas makes a good after marked one as well. Mike rolls his to a 45/45 bevel and angle. If you roll it past the 45 degree mark on the side, you get more of a swept back grind. How far you roll it determines how much sweep you get. You just put the gouge on the platform and roll it, no need for a jig.
