I would like to know where other creek dwellers purchase their shaper bits and cutters. Also, is it safe to run router bits on a shaper.

Hi Tim,

I have used router bits in my shaper, they work as well or better than they do in a router table, once you take feed rate into account.

They don't work anywhere near as well as a shaper cutter however, due to tool geometry and tip speed.

The most commonly used cutters in my shaper are the HSS steel knives used in a cutterhead. They are available from Dimar, Felder, CMT etc, and work very well in solid wood.

I have the larger steel cutterhead ( about 100mm), and the knives cost $20 to $40 per pair (aproximate).

I also use a rebating head a lot for rebates of course, and template copy work with a ball bearing.

I have Freud, CMT, Dimar and FS Tools cutters for my shaper.

Of course one of the most used tools for my shaper is the stock feeder, it improves the quality of cut, and improves safety.

In addition you can climb cut with a feeder for difficult wood or profiles.

Regards, Rod.

I use Freeborn Tool cutters out of Spokane, WA. Lightyears beyond the Grizzly cutters I had used.
