so all of the rooms in my house have transoms. they were all hinged at the bottom, latched at the top. unfortunately the means of holding them, like so many other poorly maintained older buildings, was "painted shut". they would've worked like so...

in the process of making them functional again, i'm looking around for stops and stays and not having much luck, other than a chain, which i don't really care for the appearance of.

i'd much prefer a trunk-style stay/stop like the one pictured here...

that could be hidden between the transom itself and the jamb.

but can't find any such thing in searching around various hardware sites. anyone know where to get such a thing? one with a grooved single piece of metal designed to pivot inside the jamb would be especially nice, since it could then be entirely hidden.

like so...

Have you tried an architectural salvage place?

houseofantiquehardware.com has reproduction transom window hardware but it is pretty expensive.

I just got 2 sets of these on E*** for a good price. They are Whitco sash awning or hopper hinges. I have yet to install them, but I won't need a chain or stop because they balance the window. There are cheaper ones and flimsy ones but these are what I wanted. I am making the sash this week and we'll see how it goes.

yea i checked the usual places like house of antique hardware and rejuvenation and kilians. they have the self contained mechanism that mounts on the casing, but that's kinda overkill, and i don't like the bulky look of that huge contraption on the wall. alternatively they have chain, that's about it.

how thick are those paul? i left about 1/4" between the transom and the jamb on each side, think it'd fit in there?

the above is an interesting alternative, looks like a swing mounted arm with a roller at the end, too bad they want 70 bucks for it...

Try this link. They have drawings etc.I got the steel ones and they mortise into the sides and are invisible when closed.

aha, so they are supposed to be mortised, couldn't tell from the picture, but the instructions make sense.

thanks paul, i think those are the ticket.

How about using a set of those friction hinges for toyboxes and chests, they open and stay where you stop them, or toy box lid supports, rockler has both
