Tired of saying unknown wood, :o but this first one is another piece that a neighbor gave me to make something out of. It is 3-3/4" x 5-3/4" sanded to 600 and waxed. The big one is another unknown wood that I got off the pile of firewood at the camp site. I think it is elm. It is 2-3/4" x 8-1/2" and sanded to 600 with sanding sealer and then beall buffed. Still learning.

Thanks for looking.

Very nice work on BOTH of them, Dick! :) I hope one of our wood guru's will chime in and be able to identify them, especially that second one. Beautiful grain. Oh, and me thinks you're "still learning" quite well! :D

I'm not sure, but it looks a little like some Oak I turned into a box last year. The box had some gnarly grain - almost like a burl.

Here's a picture:

I was going to call the first one either Box Elder or Sycamore. I lean toward Sycamore only because the rays are fairly pronounced in the second picture. What was the bark like?? Sycamore is different than most other trees and is not very thick with pieces that will "flake" off. Both are very nice work for sure with good use of the grain.
