View Full Version : looking for alternative worksharp abrasives

Can anyone please direct me to a good source of alternatives to the packaged worksharp abrasives? I am especially looking for ones in the 1000-6000 grit range. I can find a lot of circular adhesive-backed abrasives on the net, but not in grits this fine.

I apologize if this has been asked before. I did a search and could not find anything addressing this specifically. Thanks so much.

Could you make your own by cutting it out of a larger sheet then spraying it with 3M 77 Adhesive?

Yes, and in fact I have done that, however removing them after using the adhesive is a real PITA. I am hoping for something pre-fabricated.

Thanks for the idea, though.

Wow I was just thinking of starting a similar thread. I was wondering if there were any other sources as well. Just to help out I figure the worksharp discs are standard 6" PSA backed discs with holes in the center. If we could find a source of fine honing discs the hole part is easy. Looks like its time to spend some time on bing and google!

Our club did a group buy and ordered from both Micro Surface and Klingspor. As a group, the savings were significant. From Klingspor we bought by the box and split the cost. I believe we got a small discount from Micro Surface, but splitting the shipping is what really saved us there.

The size is slightly different and you have to cut the hole but it works fine.

3M spray adhesive "77" grips very well and is removable with about the same effort as
PSA discs. Naphtha will quickly clean off any residue at changing time.

OK, thanks. micro-surface looks like the ticket. I am going to try the adhesive route again, too, since my spray adhesive is 3M "general purpose 45" and I assume 77 is different. I'll look for that.

If you are in a hurry, check out an auto paint supply store. I found 1000 grit and 1500 grit adhesive discs there.

Micromesh is great, but watch that you don't overheat it.

I clicked on Jeff's link, "www.micro-surface.com" , got into Micro-Surface but couldn't find 6" disks among headlight repair and nail files. Did anyone fare better?

On the left hand side, go to "products by type".

Klingspor has some, but none of the real fine grits. A little hard to find, but search for SD06199. The 25 disc pack includes 5 each: 80, 120, 220, 400, 1000 grits, 11.95. Be sure and search the web for coupons; TJOOS (http://www.tjoos.com/Action/Follow-Link-Coupon.asp?P1=273038) got me free shipping ($7.99), and for an unknown reason I got 10% off the merchandise.

They also have some Festool alternatives.
