Hi guys

What's the best product to glue together plexiglas, and where can I get it? I'm gluing together 12" x 12" plexi to make a display cover and it needs to be secure.

Thanks! :)
Dave

Weld On is the best for acrylic, you can find it online or local plastic supply. Its a solvent and welds the acrylic together

David,

For secure applications, I use Weld On......but it's not optically clear. I think 3M makes one though.....but I've never tried it.

At the NYS Fair this year, there was a guy selling a great adhesive.....he could glue ANYTHING together....I wrote the name down somewhere.......

plexi-glass (acrylic) is best glued to itself with Methylene Chloride
this is a thin liquid that melts/welds the two pieces together into one

here is a some good infor for working with plexi-glass

Thanks for the replies so far, I assume Weld On #3? I called around locally, the usual people (HD Tru Value) don't carry it. Darn.

Go to page 9 or so on the pdf I posted and it tells what to use for display cases

You could also form bends.

My dad used to do some amazing things with plexi-glass
here is a the process

here are some glues

#4 should do the trick it s about 60% Methylene Chloride

A somewhat related question: what's the right answer for bonding mirrored acrylic? (I.e. does the normal adhesive work with the coating on the back?)

As with any new technique, PRACTICE FIRST! We use Weldon #3 with the little applicator bottle and needle tip. Depending on how full the bottle is and the temperature, the vapor pressure can be tricky to control so that you do not get solvent any place except the joint. That stuff is THIN.

a syringe takes care of that control problem

Dave,
Tap plastics carry them they have weld on and their own acrylic cement. I have used Tap's acrylic solvent and the edges stick on perfect.

OK I got the Weld On #3. Application is no problem, I'm using an old drafting pen. Stuff flows right into the joints.

How long does it usually take for this to cure? I glued a couple of pieces together, an hour later, they were wobbly. Feel OK now, but I'm afraid to flex it too much.

Also, does the little bevel the laser puts on the edge of the acrylic cause enough of a gap to defeat the Weld On #3 if I am gluing a display case together, with exactly 90 degree corners?

Thanks!!
