I am looking at various options for securing work on a (potentially viceless) bench - dog holes & sliding board jack only. Not sure that I understand the differences between the following products offered by Veritas:
Wonder dogs vs Surface vice
Hold down vs Surface clamp
Got the following response from their Customer Service, which does explain the physical differences, but I'm more interested in the functional / usage differences.
The main difference between the VeritasŪ Wonder DogŪ (product # 05G1001) and the VeritasŪ Surface Vise (product # 05G1050) is that the Wonder DogŪ is 6-1/2" long overall and can be used anywhere you can drill a 3/4" hole. The Surface Vise on the other hand measures 19 long and has double posts that each mount in 3/4" holes. Therefore, you only require one hole for the wonder dogŪ as opposed to 2 for the surface vise.
As for the difference between the VeritasŪ Hold-Down (product # 05G1401) and the VeritasŪ Surface Clamp (product # 05G1901), the surface clamp has a wedging mechanism that anchors it firmly in material as well as a threaded post that allows you to screw the pressure pad onto the work piece. The hold-down on the other hand does not have the wedging mechanism and is simply pressed down into place to hold the work piece in place.
Found a blog entry that mentioned the surface vice was like Wonder Dogs with quick release functionality...
If any of you guys have used these, and could comment, I'd appreciate it.
