Hi Guys,

I wanted to introduce myself. I'm a finish carpenter of 25+ years that's just taken up turning. I bought a very cheap lathe, and some very cheap turning tools, (one good bowl gouge) and I've been having a lot of fun. My biggest problem is finding inexpensive stock to turn.
I'm looking forward to being a member of the community here, I've already learned a lot by just reading. I'll post some pic's in the picture section.

Looks like I get to be the first to say "Welcome to the Creek". One good way to find turning wood (green) is to start calling tree services, and offer to take some wood off of their hands. Around here, there is more pine and fir than hardwoods, but when I do score, I score big. I usually get one or two other turners to share it with, which also makes it easier to load the big pieces.

Edit: Looks like Steve beat me to it. :)

Wow, that was quick. I just went and signed up for a Flickr account, which is something I've been meaning to do for a while anyway. My page address is:

(Stranger by the Minute is my old band name)

As far as wood goes I'm in Seattle. I'll have to call around and see what they're taking down. Thanks for the good advise.

Dean, on the Flicker account, it is better to actually upload pics on to the SMC server as they will be there for the duration. If you reference a pic in a Flicker account, and later close that account, the pic is gone. Other viewers that use SMC for research and to obtain information would not be benefitted. Just a thought.

Welcome Dean

Some nice stuff in the photos.

Just carry a chainsaw with you, and you will find cheap stock opportunities during your travels ;)

Hey Welcome to the Creek. If you drive around, you'll find more wood than you can handle. When I'm up in forested areas, I sometimes carry a chainsaw to help myself to fallen or cut wood by the road. If you join a local turning club, you'll get lots of notices for free wood as well.
Luck, Hilel.

Just a beginner, eh? I'm not sure I believe that. The bowls with the super wide rims are excellent. Did you laminate the rims before or after turning? See how this works, you post pictures and we steal your ideas, pretty cool.

Welcome... I too like the contrasting woods, and I love turned palm wood. Pretty tough wood choice for a newbie as every bit of palm I've turned wants to chip and splinter. Thanks for posting and look forward to more of your stuff in the future

Thanks for all for the kind words. To Ron...I turn the bowl, leave a wide lip and then laminate the rim. I love the look of the Black Palm and that's why I started making the rims wide, to show more of the wood off. I've really enjoyed working with wood all these years and once I learned how to hold the bowl gouge, I really started having fun...I just need to find some cheaper wood to turn....

Dean, Since you have been working with wood for 25 years you already have a good feel for what wood does and how it reacts to things. The bowls are nice and you will continue to improve as time goes by! Where are you located, we can give you better insight to where to find wood that way.

Welcome and hope to see you on the Creek,

Jeff
