After spending way too much time on my feet doing house repair-type work, I settled in for a little more SS practice. Then it happened: LOML Jr. strolled into the shop, checking to see if it was OK for her to go on the Internet. She noted that Dad was practicing on a dragon design (one of the Terry Quiram gifts from earlier in the week!). Knowing she wanted to cruise the Cyber highway, I didn't give it much thought when I said, "So, do you want to try it?" I fully expected any one of a dozen excuses of why she shouldn't, but in the end, she spent the next hour with me working on the pattern! :D In a way, it was kind of hilarious, as it was the blind teaching the blind, but we had fun and she was catching on right quick! :) Sure, we busted a couple blades and there were mistakes, which we laughed about and then tried to "cover up", but in the end, it turned out OK. She chickened out on the real detailed inside cuts, but just on the real intricate ones. The rest, she gave it the good 'ol college try! :) Anyhow, just wanted to share one of my finer moments in woodworking and being "Dad"! Thanks for checking it out!

Way to go Casey!
Glad you got to spend some Q time with her in the shop John! :D

My Little girl (9 years old) was in the shop tonight and she wants to make a pen I didn't have a blank glued up but I told her we would glue one up now and she can do it when we get back from Church:D

John,

There are no finer times that spending the time with our kids and teaching them and allowing them to experience woodworking. My 10 year old son can't wait until he's old enough to work with dad's "real tools".

Congrats on your quality time and way to go Casey!!!! :D :D

Nice day in the shop John....................don't get much better than that! So, now that Terry has ya hooked................when is the Eclipse going to be delivered? :D I watched Terry scroll for quite a while at the BBQ last weekend, and he is the master. Man, he makes it look so easy doesn't he? He gave my wife some little animals he scrolled...........duck, chicken, squirrel and I don't remember what all. We showed them to my daughter when we arrived home, and she claimed them as her own. She has them displayed on a shelf in her room. She then proceeded to ask.........."Why don't you do cool stuff like that Dad"? Sheesh............I thought the things I build and turn WERE cool............but I guess not to an 18 year old young lady! :(

I guess I will have to get a better scroll saw now! (Darn the luck!) ;)

So-o-o-o-o-o now.....Will ol' Ernie be hearing from Kevin G. any time soon? :p :D
It could be interesting in the days ahead folks..... :D

Sure Dennis.............I will give Ernie a call next week. Just get my room ready by next weekend....................cause when the Eclipse shows up on the doorstep, I am gonna need a place to live.

(Which isn't a bad idea actually....................after all, you DO have that brand new lathe I can play on while you are at work!) :p

Gads....I was kinda' *hoping* somebody *wouldn't* ask that! Oh well. Here it goes. Now, remember, twas two total greenhorns at this, so don't laugh too loud! Please? Total size is about 7x9" and done on some simple Birch 1/4" ply. No finish or anything, though Casey said she's probably going to try putting some dye to it or something. If she decides to keep it, I'll go ahead and whip up some backer board for it, contrasting whatever color(s) she decides for the main body.

Oh, and thanks to all for your kind words!

Hey, that's still all in ONE piece John...................a victory by my standards! ;) Heck, that looks pretty good.....................good thing Casey showed up to take over...............she does great work at salvaging your stuff! :D All fun aside, that looks great to me John...........you should BOTH be proud. Pretty cool..............indeed! :)

John, nothing at all wrong with that. Looks great from where I'm sitting. Definitely post pics when finished, would love to see the dye outcome!

I just spent an hour or two scrolling some ornaments for some craft shows my partner and I are doing soon. stacked some 1/8 baltic birch up and then cut out 4 sets of a firefighter with axe on his shoulder. Brought one home to show the lOML who is an EMT and a firefighter, she liked it, need to do some more though. Several of our shows are at fire halls, so I expect they'll be popular. The LOML is sleeping, I might sneak back over and work on another couple of ornaments, nah, better get some sleep myself, I have to work tomorrow night and we're planning on going to a craft show tomorrow, weather permitting.

Thanks John,
Your experience makes me think I better get my rear in gear making the shop appropriate for my little man so he can work with dad. :)

Looks good John that thin wood that is open ain't easy to do---most of the time it gets broken. Have you tried making a Basket yet---they are real cool on a scrool saw.

I agree with everything said above... it is great when you child wants to be in the shop... my 5 yr old daughter is Daddy's shop assistant.. so far I only allow her to sand stuff, but she loves to sweep up the sawdust for me (gotta love that)... LOL...
Tell your daughter to go to my website (Old Griz Scroll Art (www.oldgriz.biz)) and pick any pattern she likes for her next project as a gift from me... have fun... email me which one she wants
Too soon boys will take over and then she will totally forget Daddy exists.. LOL...

Congratulations on a job well done by both of you.

Both my daughters worked with me in the shop when they were growing up and they used a wide range of tools. But, I did not even know about power scroll saws then (ever heard of a coping saw? -those we used) . I am sure that if we had possesed a scroll saw I would have seen even more of Kathleen and Kristel in the shop.

Nice work father and daughter!

There is a nice article in Wood September '04 issue about building a jewelry box with your daughter. It is a nice looking box that I intend to build. You and Casey would have a big time doing it together.

I have a dart board in the shop. Some of my fondest memories in the shop with my son were when we would do something together and then take a break for darts. You will not go wrong spending those hours together. Besides she might marry a wieny who doesn't know which end of a screwdriver to use and she'll have to teach him.

Good work, Dad!

The Master Scoller will tell you to get Scroll America blades. Size: #2, #3, #4 and #5.....If you're like me.....you'll need to buy them by the Gross instead of by the dozen.!! UNLESS you have an Eclipse!!!!!! ;) :D

Hey Spring,
I'm glad to see that your DW488 is being used by someone who is SERIOUS about using a quality power tool!! ;) You better stand back, dad, and watch the magic happen!

Incidentally, I hear that Sen. Kerry is spending a few days in your neighborhood (House on the Rock) getting ready for the debate.

Just a tip. If he wants to get elected, he will have to learn to smile a little more than he does. If I was a Democrat, I'd send some of my projects down there for him to look at. That would not only elicit a smile but they would have him rolling on the floor in laughter. Too late though. I'm looking for a Cabinet position as Secretery of Scrap in the administration of the new Woodworking President. Be nice to me. I'm soon to be in a very powerful position!! :)
