spoke pointers and hollow auger setup

I have a hollow auger and just recently got a spoke pointer. Are these tools bevel up to the wood or bevel down to the wood. The blades will go in either way.

I love to experiment.

When no one was looking, I would try it both ways and pick the one that works best.

I wouldn't want anyone to be watching in case one way crashed and burned particularly badly.
