A neighbor had a plum tree in his front yard that had been there since he can remember, probably 50-60 years. A car ran through the plum tree and destroyed it. He would like to save and dry some of the trunk to make a keep sake. Anyone ever worked with plum (native) wood?

I harvested a plum tree that came down in an ice storm 3 or 4 years ago. This was for turning stock. Pretty wood, cuts like pear, but my oh my, does it like to crack.

If your neighbor wants it for lumber, cut it overlong and over-thick, stack and sticker it well, and I still don't know how much good yield you'll get out of it.

I turned a piece of plum once, it is a very pretty wood. Very hard and it tends to develop cracks. Make sure he coats the ends of the boards or pieces to keep them from drying out too fast.
