Can someone recommend a non-poly varnish? I can't seem to find Pratt & Lambert #38 anywhere.

Any Sherwin Williams store should be able to order it for you. Sherwin Williams purchased Pratt & Lambrett about 15 years ago.

Here are some:

Waterlox Original Gloss or Satin
Behlen Rockhard
Cabot 8000 (used to be McCloskey Heirloom)
Pratt & Lambert #38
Sherwin Williams Varnish

If you try for Sherwin Williams, check specifically to see if it is non-poly. My local store only carries poly. I never thought of special ordering.

If you have Lowes near you, the most readily available will be Cabots. There's alkyd (red can) and spar alkyd (green can). use the red if you want a straight varnish.

You can mail order the others mentioned above.

I have been in 20+ SW stores and they all carry the Sherwin Williams Original Oil Varnish whiich is a quality Alkyd resin varnish. It'd in a burgandy and black can.

I bought P&L #38 here, didn't kill me on the shipping and seemed to be nice folks to deal with:

Howard, do you think the Cabot's is "equal" to the P&L?

Thanks.

The Cabot will be slightly more amber.

I was finally able to find P&L #38 in quarts only at an independent paint store (Clark Paint in West Springfield MA). None of the Shermin Williams or True Values I checked had it or were able to order it. One guy told me that this is due to VOC restrictions.
