Father-in-law gave these to me, although he didn't tell me what they were used for. Anybody know what they are and how they're used?

The small tool is a saw set.

The two big ones look like some kind of special application toggle clamps.

Jim identified the saw set. I've never seen anything quite like those two larger tools, but could they be saw tooth cutters?

Could you post a picture of their bottoms?
(why does that question sound pervy?)

Any markings? check the sides of the lever.

The lever jambs something on the comb/hair pick thing till the orange pad is above the blade with the spring return. Smack the orange pad with a hammer, and it cuts whatever the comb was holding.

Are there any hammer marks on the orange pad?

For some reason I keeping thinking its for cutting straps off.

Just got a clue from the F-I-L...these tools were not his, but his brother's, who was a carpenter. The top two have something to do with mortising hinges. One is made by Stanley, so it must have been a fairly common tool. I really thought someone here might have used these at some point and could let me know how to use them.

You could look over at http://55tools.blogspot.com/ to see if he's got pictures anything like these tools. Or you could also submit your photos to Rob and see if anyone can identify them.

Added:
Here's a link to some info on the patent for a Waller Hinge Morticing tool - http://www.datamp.org/displayPatent.php?pn=1603652&id=9260
There should also be images available from the USPTO (http://patft.uspto.gov/), but my plugin for viewing them is not working... so I can't see what's there...

Does it have a number on it?

what company made the other one?

more pictures?

I would try using them on the 1.5" side of a 2x4
use it to score/chisel the edges first
then pull the forked chisel to remove the waste

:DHarry, I think you've got it! Is there anywhere that demonstrates how they are used? Since I have the darn things, I'd love to know how they are used. They are in perfectly good working condition as far as I can tell.

The book says they have a ratcheting action.

Not sure if there is any information on the net, a search brought up a lot of hits.

It looks like it straddles a door jam and the lever is moved back and forth to pull the cutter into the wood where the mortise is wanted.

Kind of a fuzzy photo but this is from a Stanley Catalog.

Fred, thanks...that helps a lot. I can see now, how it might work. I'll have to figure out the various adjustments.
