I was called in to consult on one of my competitors jobs. It seems he used a water-based poly( one of the popular, established brands) on a beautiful hard maple kitchen. The finish is wearing very poorly. The maker came back a few times and tried to fix the problems, but problems persist. This kitchen is only 1 1/2 years old.
The owner is asking if the finish can be completely stripped off and an oil based poly applied.
Does anyone have any experience in stripping water based poly?

A good paint stripper containing methylene chloride will do the job. Be sure to follow the directions on the label.

I'm not a fan of using a waterborne finish in kitchens but I am really surprised it failed so quickly. There is something more to the problem.

Thanks Howard, what are some other potential problems that could cause a water based poly to fail?
